Bush Warns Dems to Take Offer in Firings

By LAURIE KELLMAN, Associated Press Writer document.write(getElapsed("20070321T020728Z")); 2 hours ago WASHINGTON - A defiant President Bush warned Democrats Tuesday to accept his offer to have top aides speak about the firings of federal prosecutors only privately and not under oath, or risk a constitutional showdown from which he would not back down. Democrats' response was swift and firm: They said they would start authorizing subpoenas as soon as Wednesday for the White House aides. "Testimony should be on the record and under oath. That's the formula for true accountability," said Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Bush, in a late-afternoon statement at the White House, said he would fight any subpoena effort in court. "We will not go along with a partisan fishing expedition aimed at honorable public servants," he said... ~ Two quick thoughts: In my brief lifetime of 40 years I have yet to see another President with the kind of arrogance of President Bush. Did we elect a king or a President? As for Rove, could someone please tell our President that Mr. Rove has been at the center of nearly every major controversy of his tenure. If Rove is an honorable public servant, the essence of 'honorable' has been lost. So, HOPE. We can hope for a better vision for the future of our nation. We can hope for someone who can cast ideas that create hopes and dreams. We can. It is a piece of our very essence to have hope... hope for healing... hope for goodness and kindness... hope for a ceasing of wars... hope for the poor... Either we are stuck embracing our personal identity of 'republican' or 'democrat' or we can move forward looking for people who give us hope...
